History Sketch

Due to the energy and the initiative of a group of public-spirited citizens of Baxter, Tennessee, and its surrounding communities, Baxter Seminary was started in the year 1909, following closely upon the existence of two former great schools in this section of the State and of the South.

In 1910 citizens of Baxter met for the purpose of securing land, and utilizing the saved equipment of Bloomington College, Bloomington, Tennessee, founded about 1889, and Wesleyan Memorial Academy, Red Boiling Springs, Tennessee, founded about 1897, both of which schools had ceased at different times to exist because of the lack of funds.  Some of the equipment of these two schools is still most serviceable and is in use even to this day.  Students soon came to Baxter Seminary in addition to the local pupils, for the Seminary was ready for them in 1910, and until 1922 both the elementary and the high school years of instruction were taught by a competent faculty maintained throughout all of those years by very fine executives.  Since 1922 Baxter Seminary has served especially as a standard "A" grade secondary educational institution, and in 1925 became a member of the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools of the Southern States, which membership it has held ever since.  It is also a member of a great many organizations, local, state wide and national.

While the Seminary is under the direction of the Board of Education of the Methodist Episcopal Church, it serves its people in a non-sectarian way, and always functions closely with the Putnam County Board of Education, the State Department of Education, and the various agencies dealing with educational service and development, here in the Cumberland Highlands.  The Seminary has made many advancements all through the years of its existence, and the administration since its founding have had as their aims the cultivation of a keen sense of Truth, Honor, Loyalty, and Service, in the hearts and lives of its students.
